Newhouse School journalism and photography students will be capturing photos, video, and audio at the 43rd Empire State Winter Games from Feb. 1-4, 2024, in Lake Placid, N.Y., and throughout the Adirondacks region. With more than 2,000 competitors for 20+ sports, the Games is the Northeast’s largest multi-sport amateur athletic winter sporting event.

Biathlon

Combines the physically demanding sport of cross-country skiing with the precision of marksmanship.

Cross Country

Divided into two techniques, classic and skate, cross-country skiing is known for being one of the most physically demanding sports.

Figure Skating

Elegance, grace, and beauty. This art form features many divisions including youth singles, adult singles and synchronized team skating.

Freestyle Moguls

Balance, style, and speed make up the sport of freestyle moguls. Each competitor receives two timed, judged runs.

Junior Bobsled

Long track competitors will compete outdoors on the 400m Olympic Oval in one of the fastest sports on ice.

Luge

Speed and aerodynamics define the sport of luge. Sliding down an icy track, athletes look to shave off every thousandth of a second.

Ski Orienteering

An endurance winter sport combining navigation and cross-country skiing across a rough terrain using prepared cross-country ski tracks.

Sled Hockey
